Italy on Dipity.
The earliest accounts of human life in Italy date all the way back to 9th century BC. The people were divided into three separate groups, but the Latin culture became to most dominant of the three. Then around 350 BC Rome became one of the most powerful city-states there was. What was then considered a city-state, Rome took over the country we now know as Italy. Over the next few centuries the empire spread and began to have control over most of Western Europe. After many years of power the Roman Empire fell during the fifth century and many other countries began to invade Italy. These invasions caused Italy to break apart in to many separate regions all governed by different governments. Many of these new regions became very powerful because of trade, leading Italy to a time period known as the renaissance. A new kingdom was established in Italy in 1861 that built a huge empire colonizing many countries in Africa and across the Mediterranean. Many parts of Italy still remained poor despite its new power. By 1870 the Papal States joined Italy’s kingdom and covered almost all of what is now considered modern day Italy. Next came WW1 in in 1940 which Italy joined by invading Greece. Soon after, Italy fell to the fascist led by Mussolini causing a bloody civil war, but they eventually won in 1943 and defeating the fascist and Nazi Germany. Modern Italy is democratic republic, in 1946 Italy was officially liberated and its constitution was drafted. This caused a period of rapid economic growth and modernization for the country. In 1949 Italy joined NATO and became the major power we know it as today.
