1. Record:
Oil Production: 152.72 thousand barrels per day
Oil Consumption: 1,493.8 thousand barrels per day
2. Summarize: Write a short paragraph explaining the information you discovered and conclusions you can draw. How does this information help you develop a sense of place for the country -- living conditions, social development, use of land or other resources, etc.?
This information was not at all what I thought it would be. I had the feeling that Italy was consuming more oil than they produced because they are a quite advanced country but I did not realize to what extent it would be. Italy is using almost 9,000 times more oil than they are producing, which is almost as bad as the US. It helps me develop a sense for the country. The need for this much oil must mean there are many people who drive vehicles and the military is probably quite stong, and large. It also leads me to believe that they are quite socially deveolped in Italy because of all of these things. It does make me think Italy may be more polluted than I thought because of the use of all this oil in vehicles. Perhaps there are not enough oil resources in Italy itself, or they are not taking full advantage of the resources they have in front of them, much like many other countries.
3. Contemplate:
What questions does the information raise in your mind. Write down two questions you have based on what you have discovered.
What Is Italy's #1 export?
What exacly is all of this oil being used for?

Italy has the ninth-largest economy in the world and the fourth largest in Europe. Italy has a very diverse economy with high gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Italy was transformed from an agricultural based economy, into an industrialized economy, and has become one of the leading countries in the world for exports. There is a large divide in Italy’s economy, making the country a mixed economy. The north is considered a developed industrial economy dominated by private companies, and the south is a less-developed agricultural economy where unemployment is high. The Italian economy is driven by the manufacture of consumer goods produced by small family-owned enterprises. Italy also has a sizable underground economy, which by some estimates accounts for as much as 17% of GDP. These activities are most common within the agriculture, construction, and service sectors.
Italy GDP is $1.863 trillion, which ranks 11th overall in the world.
The unemployment rate in Italy is 29.1%, and most of these people are living in the South. Most of the jobs in the South are on the farm so those who are not physically able tend to be unemployed. Another big factor of Italy’s economy is education. Nearly everyone receives at lease some form of education and 99% of the country is literate. This tells us that education is important to Italians, and most people strive to become educated. Life expectancy in Italy is 82 years old. This is the eleventh highest life expectancy in the world. This tells us that Italians value their health and that the elderly receive quality care.
